Altimetry Flashcards
Define Pressure
Force per unit area
What is a hectopascal?
1000 dynes per cm^2
Define Height
Vertical positions of a level, a point or object measured from a specific datum, other than MSL
Define Altitude
Vertical position of a level, point or object measured from MSL
Define Elavation
Vertical position of an object affixed to or on the surface of the Earth, measured from MSL.
Define QFE
Atmospheric pressure corrected to a specific elevation.
Define QNH
Atmospheric pressure corrected to MSL, assuming ISA
Define Aerodrome Elavation
Elevation of the highest point on the landing area, upon which the height of the visual manoeuvring circling is based, for each runway.
Define Threshold Elavation
Elavation of the threshold of the runway. Given if lower than 7ft from the point of highest elevation
Transition Altitude
Altitude at or below which the vertical position of an aircraft is controlled by reference to altitudes.
Transition Level
Lowest flight level available for use above transition altitude
What altimeter settings are used at each stage of flight?
Take-off - QNH/QFE
Climb - QNH until TA, then Standard Setting
En-route - Standard Setting
Descent - QNH After TL
Landing - QNH (QFH if requested)
Missed approach - QNH though may have to be passed again
What are Regional Pressure Settings used for?
For terrain clearances and to establish the transition level where applicable.
Derived from the lowest QNH as reported in 1 or 2 hours periods
Define Flight Level:
A surface of constant atmospheric pressure, which is related to a specific pressure datum, 1013.25hpa, and is seperated from other such surfaces by specific pressure intervals.
