Air Traffic Services Flashcards
List the ATS:
Flight Information Service
Alerting Service
Air Traffic Advisory Service
Air Traffic Control Service
What factors determine ATS provision?
Type of traffic Traffic density Meteorological conditions Topography Navigation Aids available
List the objectives of ATS:
Prevent collisions between aircraft in air and on the manoeuvring area
Prevent collisions between aircraft and obstructions in air and on the manoeuvring area
Expedite and maintain an orderly flow of air traffic
Provide advice and information for the safe and efficient conduct of flight.
Notify appropriate organisations regarding aircraft in need os SAR.
What information does FIS provide?
SIGMET and AIRMET for departure, arrival and alternate aerodromes.
Changes in availability of radio navigation services
Changes in conditions of aerodromes and associated facilities
Collision hazards class C, D, E, F and G airspace.
To whom is an Alerting Service provided?
Aircraft receiving ATC
Aircraft having filed a flight plan.
An aircraft known or believed to be subject to unlawful interference.
What are the urgency and distress signals?
Urgency - Pan Pan, flashing lights, xxx
Distress - Mayday, Red flare, sos.
What are the responsibilities of an Alerting Service?
Notify the rescue coordination centre and other units in affected FIRs and control areas.
Request assistance in search of information pertaining to the aircraft.
Collect information gathered during each phase and transmit to the rescue coordination centre.
Announce the termination of the state of emergency when appropriate.
Which control area coordinates an Alerting Service?
Control area where radio contact was last established.
Control area that was about to be entered when last contact was established.
Control area within which the aircraft’s intermediate stop or final destination point is located when no radio communication has taken place.
Under what conditions is an uncertainty phase commenced?
No communication received within 30 minutes of expected communication time or after initial failure to establish communication.
Failure to arrive within 30 minutes of estimated arrival time.
When is an alert phase commenced?
When further attempts to establish communication have failed and no further information has come to light.
When an aircraft has failed to land within 5 minutes of clearance and no further contact has been established.
Information has been received indicating the operating efficiency of the aircraft has been impaired but will not cause a forced landing.
Aircraft is known or believed to be subject to unlawful interference.
When is a distress phase commenced?
When further attmels to establish communication have failed and widespread inquires indicate likelyhood of aircraft being in distress
When fuel on board is considered to be exhausted or insufficient for the aircraft to reach safety.
Information has been received indicating operating efficiency has been impaired to the extent that a forced landing is likely.
Information has been received or it is within reasonable certainly that a forced landing will or has been made.
What information is provided as part of essential traffic information?
Reported to each aircraft that has or is going to loose seperation.
Direction of flight of opposing aircraft.
Type and wake turbulance category
Crusing level
Estimated time over reporting point where level will be crossed
Relative distance and bearing of aircraft concerned in terms of 12 hour clock.
Actual or estimated position of aircraft.
What is an air traffic advisory service?
Temporary service provided in advisory airspace to ensure IFR seperation.
Also provides detailed information of collision hazards.
What is the function of an advisory service?
Advise departure time and cruise levels as per the flight plan unless potential conflict.
Suggest course of action to avoid hazards
Pass aircraft traffic information.
Aircraft in advisory airspace has priority over aircraft desiring to enter.
