Antagonist of aldosterone
-> Inhibit sodium absorption in the distal tubule –> increasing sodium and water excretion and reducing potassium excretion

Indications for use?
A
Primary hyperaldosteronism Refractory oedema associated with secondary hyperaldosteronism, eg cirrhosis of the liver Resistant hypertension (adjunct) Hirsutism in females

Side effects?
A
hyperkalaemia hyponatraemia hypochloraemia (especially when combined with thiazide diuretics) weakness headache nausea/ vomiting gynecomastia / mastalgia (secondary to anti-androgen effect) (Ref:AMH)
