Calcium Channel Blockers Flashcards
1
Q
Dihydropyridines
- MOA
- Examples
- Uses
- Side effects
A
- Inhibit L type calcium channel blockers on smooth muscle cells –> decrease systemic vascular resistance and BP
Minimal effect on myocardial cells - Amlodipine
- Antihypertensive
- Peripheral odema, flushing, headache, gingival hyperplasia
peripheral oedema –> due to redistribution of extracellular fluid (rather than fluid retention); this does not respond to treatment with diuretics, which may put patient at risk of volume depletion. (AMH)
2
Q
Non-Dihydropyridines
- MOA
- Examples
- Uses
- Contraindications
- Side effects
A
- Inhibit the T type Calcium Channel blockers in the pacemaker cells of the heart –> decreases contractility, HR and conduction
- Verapamil, Diltizaem (has more of an effect on arterial smooth muscle)
- SVT, AF, Angina (if beta blockers are contraindicated)
- Heart Failure
- Constipation, bradycardia
