Calcium Channel Blockers Flashcards

1
Q

Dihydropyridines

  1. MOA
  2. Examples
  3. Uses
  4. Side effects
A
  1. Inhibit L type calcium channel blockers on smooth muscle cells –> decrease systemic vascular resistance and BP
    Minimal effect on myocardial cells
  2. Amlodipine
  3. Antihypertensive
  4. Peripheral odema, flushing, headache, gingival hyperplasia

peripheral oedema –> due to redistribution of extracellular fluid (rather than fluid retention); this does not respond to treatment with diuretics, which may put patient at risk of volume depletion. (AMH)

Q

Non-Dihydropyridines

  1. MOA
  2. Examples
  3. Uses
  4. Contraindications
  5. Side effects
A
  1. Inhibit the T type Calcium Channel blockers in the pacemaker cells of the heart –> decreases contractility, HR and conduction
  2. Verapamil, Diltizaem (has more of an effect on arterial smooth muscle)
  3. SVT, AF, Angina (if beta blockers are contraindicated)
  4. Heart Failure
  5. Constipation, bradycardia
