Aggression Flashcards
Aggression
behavior intended to harm another of the same species
nature-nuture controversy
classic debate whether genetic or environmental factors determine human behavior
Excitation Transfer Model
The expression of aggression is a function of learnt behavior, some excitations from another source and the persons interpretation of the arousal state such as aggressive response seems appropriate
Hate Crimes
a class of violence against members of a stereotyped minority group
Social Learning Theory
zhe view championed by Bandura that human social behavior is not innate but learnt from appropriate models
Learning by direct experience
acquring a behavior bc we were rewarded for it
learning by vicarious experience
acquring a behavior after observing that another person was rewarded for it
Type A personality
a behavioral correlate of heart disease characterized by striving to achieve, time urgency, competitiveness and hostility (Feindselichkeit)
Catharsis
a dramatic release of pent-up feelings, the idea that aggressive motivation is ‘‘drained’’ by acting against a frustrating object or by vicarious experience
Catharic hypothesis
The notion that acting aggressively or even just viewing aggressive material, reduces feeling of anger and aggression
Disinhibition
A breakdown in the learnt controls against behaving impulsively or aggressively
-> for some ppl alcohol has an disinhibiting effect

Dehumanization
stripping ppl of their dignity and humanity
Collective aggression
unified aggression by a group of individuals who may not even know one another, against another individual or group

Machismo
a code in which challenges, abuse and even differences of opinion must be met with fists or even weapon
Desensitization
a serious reduction in a persons responsiveness to material that usually evokes a strong emotional reaction, such as violence or sexuality
Neo-associationist analysis
a view of aggression according to which mass media may provide images of violence to an audience that later translate into antisocial acts
Priming
activation of accessible categories or schemas in memory that influence how we process information
Weapons Effect
The mere presence of a weapon increases the probability that it will be used aggressively
Milligram explanation of aggression
ordinary ppl can feel agents of the state and carry out orders that harm others (if voice of authority seems legit)
Sherif explanation of aggression
Large scale conflict depends on nature of intergroup relations, discriminatory acts against an outgrip will flourish only when the objective interests of ones own group are threatened
Bond explanation of aggression
both individual and social levels of aggresion
Tajfel explanation of aggression
group-centred approach, the existence of in-groups lays the foundation for prejudice/discrimination/conflict
