27
Q

What is the action stage of Prochaskas model of behaviour change?

A

The plan made in the preparation stage is put into place

28
Q

What usually occurs in this stage

A

They have made a significant decision to change their behaviour i.e., going to a behavioural/cognitive therapist.

29
Q

What effective intervention could we put in place to help individuals in the action stage?

A

Develop coping strategies to help them maintain their behaviour change

30
Q

What statements might an individual in the action stage say to themselves?

A

I have stopped
lets do this!
i am motivated to change

31
Q

What is meant by the maintenance stage?

A

the individual has kept up their behaviour change for more than 6 months

32
Q

During the maintenance stage, what does the individual do focus on to keep up their behaviour change?

A

They focus on relapse prevention such as avoiding situations where their addiction might be triggered.

33
Q

What is meant by relapse prevention?

A

strategies to help an individual stay away from their addictive substance/behaviour

34
Q

What is a potential issue with the maintenance stage?

A

it is a lengthy process and the individual needs to keep focussed on their long term goal of termination

35
Q

What effective intervention may we put in place to help an individual in the maintenance stage?

A

applying the coping strategies they learnt in the action stage and use sources of support

36
Q

What statements may an individual in the maintenance stage say to themselves?

A

I have kept up this change!
Stay on track
I have still stopped

37
Q

What is the final stage of Prochaska’s model of behaviour change?

A

Termination

38
Q

What is meant by Termination?

A

Newly acquired behaviours have come automatic/ apart of the individuals routine

39
Q

During termination, how does the individual feel?

A

they are no longer turning to their addictive substance/behaviour to cope and are confident that they can resist

40
Q

What does the termination stage consider about addiction?

A

That this stage may not be possible for everyone

41
Q

If an individual is not able to reach the termination stage, what must they consider?

A

that prolonged maintenance maybe the goal and that relapse is possible

42
Q

What can we do for an individual who is struggling to get to the termination stage?

A

Provide skills to work through the earlier stages of the process quickly

43
Q

What statements might an individual say to themselves if they are successful in termination?

A

i will never go back to how i was
i will never______ again
I’m not going back

44
Q

How is relapse viewed in this model?

A

it is not considered as a failure and it can occur at any time

45
Q

What happens if an individual does unfortunately relapse?

A

They will return to earlier stages of contemplation and preparation and start the cycle again.

46
Q

What stage is Signourney at?

A

Maintenance stage

47
Q

What does the model predict could happen if she relapses?

A

If she relapses, the model suggests that Sigourney would return to an earlier stage in the process. For example, this could be precontemplation (if she denies her smoking is a problem), or perhaps action (if she take steps to give up cigarettes again).

48
Q

How could Sigourney be helped?

A

The aim of intervention is to reduce as much as possible the impact of relapse by helping the individual return to maintenance as quickly as possible. Sigourney might need support in developing other coping skills (or applying the ones she has) to achieve this.
