Acute inflammation I Flashcards
What type of inflammation is characteristically seen in body cavities?
Fibrinous inflammation
What is “organization”?
Ingrowth of fibroblasts and blood vessels if fibrin is not completely removed following fibrinous inflammation
At what vascular level does increased permeability take place?
Capillaries and postcapillary venules
What are cell adhesion molecules?
- Membrane proteins that promote leukocyte attachment and participation in the inflammatory response 2. Selectins, Ig family, integrins
What are selectins?
Calcium-dependent lectins expressed on surface of endothelium, platelets, and leukocytes that serve as homing receptors and mediate ROLLING of leukocytes along endothelium at sites of inflammation
Are selectins involved in FIRM adhesion?
No
What does P-selectin recognize?
Lewis-X type oligosaccharides on surface proteins and PSGL-1
Where is E-selectin synthesized?
Stimulated endothelium (by TNFa or IL-1)
What is the function of ICAM-1?
Assists in localization of leukocytes to tissue injury
Where is ICAM-1 expressed?
Surface of cytokine stimulated ENDOTHELIUM
What does ICAM-1 bind to?
LFA-1 and Mac-1 present on cell membranes of neutrophils and macrophages
What does VCAM-1 bind to?
Integrin VLA-4 on lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils
What is the function of PECAM-1 (CD31)?
Plays important role in the diapedesis step of leukocyte emigration
What does PECAM-1 (CD31) bind to?
CD31 of apposing cell in a homophilic manner
What are the functions of integrins?
Regulation of cellular matrix and cell-to-cell adhesion, linking cytoskeleton to exterior environment
