ACT test Flashcards
Why is the ACT performed?
Screening test for bleeding disorders
What does the acronym ACT mean?
Activated Coagulation Time
What substance is contained in the ACT tube? Why is it used?
Kaolin; it is the surface activator and does not interfere with normal clotting
How much blood is needed to perform the ACT?
2 mL
How should the blood be drawn that is to be used to perform the ACT?
- Do a venipuncture (preferably jugular) with the vacutainer system and collect 1-2 ml of blood in a tube. (This flushes the system of any tissue thromboplastins)
- Replace the plain tube with the preheated ACT tube and collect 2 ml of blood
When should the timing start for the clotting?
Timing should start when the blood first contacts the kaolin
How is the ACT calculated?
The ACT time is the difference between the first contact with the kaolin and the first signs of clotting
What is the normal ACT for dogs and cats
dogs: 90-120 sec
cats: 60-90 sec
