Acne Flashcards
four pillars of acne pathogenesis
follicular epidermal hyperproliferation, excess sebum, inflammation, P. acnes
What role do androgens (testosterone) play in acne?
they stimulate the sebaceous gland to produce sebum
what does P. acnes do with sebum. How else do they contribute to inflamm
converts the Triglycerides into FFAs which contribute to inflamm. Activate TLRs which bring in cytokines
non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions in acne
Non- comedones. Inflammatory- papules and pustules, nodules and cysts
Polycystic ovary syndrome
too many androgens. Can look like acne vulgaris but you get facial hair and alopecia
First, second, severe treatments for acne
topical retinoid, oral antibiotics, oral isotretinoin
hormonal acne treatments
combination birth control pills, spironolactone (androgen blocker)
Acne Rosacea: pathogenesis. symptoms. tx
unknown but cathelicidins are elevated. Redness, telangiectases. papules and pustules but NO COMEDONES
Perioral dermatitis: aggravating factors. Tx
topical glucocorticoids! Give topical agensts or oral antibiotics
hidradenitis suppurativa: who? where? what?
females, axillae/breast/inguinal/buttocks. tender red draining nodules and abcesses
