Expected side effects for mifepristone and misopristol
Bleeding and cramping will begin within a couple hours of taking misopristol, may also expect nausea, diarrhea, fever, and chills
Non-pharm care for abortion
OTC products for diarrhea, no NSAIDs for pain
When do you call your provider?
Bleeding that soaks 2 full-size pads per hour for 2 consecutive hours, fever >101 degrees or prolonged fever (<4 hours) >100 degrees, pain not responsive to pain meds or diffuse/severe abdominal pain, general malaise >24 hours after last misoprostol dose, minimal bleeding and you don’t think you passed the pregnancy, continued pregnancy symptoms after 7 days
Mifepristone MoA
Deducial necrosis, rhythmic uterine contraction, cervical ripening to lead to detachment and expulsion
When can contraception be initiated after an abortion?
All methods immediately following a successful, uncomplicated abortion
Depo shot and implant may be provided the same day as the mifepristone
CHC may be started on the day of misoprostol administration
IUD as early as 5 days after mifepristone
Tubal ligation as soon as abortion is confirmed
Which drug is on the REMS list?
Mifepristone- only certain providers can dispense it
