Supported but:
-wasn’t ready 4 equality, resulted in discrimination
-feared blacks would take jobs from whites.
Feared it hurt business(textiles and banking)
Feared it’d cause war between north and south
Nat turner
1831 led slave rebellion, killed in VA
Laws passed making illegal to teach slaves to read and write.
Frederick Douglass
Escaped space of MD, learned to read and write from master’s wife.
Went to North, gave speeches of expierence.
Started anti-slavery newspaper “North Star”
Wrote narrative,world against American discrimination in north
South’s reaction to abolition
Agricultural economy was based on cotton and slave labor
- blamed abolitionist for slave rebellion
- wanted abolitionist literature suppressed
- feared slaves would murder them

Series of secret routes to help slaves escape from south
Most went NORTH to Canada but few went south to Mexico. Many people faced great risks to help slaves escape
Grimke Sisters
Sarah & Angela Grimke, daughters of SC plantation owner grew up with slavery and saw first hand the evils of slavery. Moved to PA became Quakers and abolitionist. Gave speeches and wrote articles,letters based on first hand knowledge of slavery
