Which bacterial organisms cause meningitis in normal adults? ( and gram stain)
Niesseria meningitidis = gram neg Cocci
Streptococcus Pneumoniae = gram pos diplococci
Which bacterial organisms cause meningitis in neonates? (and gram stain)
Same as adults PLUS Group B strep AND Listeria- gram pos rods AND E.Coli - gram neg rods
Which bacterial organisms cause meningitis in elderly?
Same as adults PLUS Group B strep AND Listeria- gram pos rods AND Mycobacterium TB (usually chronic)
Which viral organisms cause meningitis?
Coxsakie, mumps, HSV2
Which fungal organisms cause meningitis?
Cryptococcus neoformans

High protein
Low glucose`

How do you treat adult meningitis?
Ceftriaxone 2mg bd IV
And add Ampicillin for listeria
Use amoxicillin if immunocompromised
Add acyclovir if encephalitis
