Catholics and Protestants wanted to convert Natives to their religion, the religious-based reason for Europeans coming to the New World.

The cultural movement of new goods, ideas, inventions, and European expansion.

A tool that helped the Europeans with navigation and sailing.
What was Reconquista? And what was the result of it?
The Spanish expelled Muslims and Jews from the Iberian Peninsula in 1492. They gained great power from this but leaves an abundance of warriors and trauma.

Cortés, Pizzaro. European men who came to the New World hoping to claim land and conquer natives.

A Spaniard who takes over the Mexican mainland, and conquers the Aztecs.
How do the Spanish practice their conquering skills?
They conquer small islands off the coast of Africa and islands in the Atlantic.

He captured their leader and freeze the empire. He had weapons and horses (that the Natives have never seen), and with alliances, he succeeds

Originally colonial governors who could govern as they liked. Known for being brutal towards their Native slaves.
What was the Encomienda System?
A system that gave land to the Spanish in the New World, they could use it as they pleased and used their slaves in a brutal way.
Who was Bartolome de Las Casas?
He was a Catholic priest who wrote about the horrors of the Encomienda System and how badly the Natives were being treated.
What did Bartolome de Las Casas want to happen in the New World?
He wanted to replace the Encomienda System and convert the Natives to Christianity.
What was the Casta System?
A system that explains mixed-race families of the New World and Spaniards.
The Spanish people believed in the superiority of Pure Blood Spaniards. But it didn’t work. Why?
