A&P chapter 15- respiratory system Flashcards
what are the function units of the lungs
air sacs called alveoli
what is pulmonary edema
accumulation of fluid in the alcove
what are the respiratory centers
medulla and pons
What is intrapleural pressure and is it the same as atmospheric pressure
within the pleural space, is always slightly below atmospheric pressure (negative)
where is intrapulmonic pressure
within the bronchial tree and alveoli
what is tidal volume
amount of air in one normal inhalation and exhalation
what is minute respiratory volume
amount of air inhaled and exhaled in 1 minute
what is inspiratory volume
amount of air beyond tidal in a maximal inhalation
what is expiratory reserve
amount of air beyond tidal in the most forceful exhalation
what is vital capacity
sum of tidal, inspiratory and expiratory reserved
what is alveolar ventilation
air that reaches the alveoli for gas exchange
what is respiratory acidosis
a decrease in the rate or efficiency of respiration merits excess O2 to accumulate in the body fluids, resulting in the formation of excess H+ ions, which lower pH. occurs in severe pulmonary disease
what is respiratory alkalosis
increase in the rate of respiration increases CO2 exhaled, decreases H+ ions and raises pH, during hyperventilation or when first at high altitude
