9.3 Flashcards
What are valuable components of gasoline?
Hydrocarbons that contain Carbon atoms with double or triple bonds
Why are hydrocarbons that contain double or triple bonds important?
Because they are the starting materials for the manufacturing of many derivatives, including plastics
What are unsaturated compounds?
Organic compounds with with carbon-carbon double or triple bonds
Why are unsaturated compounds known as unsaturated compounds?
Because they have fewer hydrogen atoms than compounds with carbon-carbon single bonds, they are able to take on more if needed
What is hydrogenation?
The addition of a sufficient quantity of hydrogen that converts unsaturated hydrocarbons to saturated ones
What is an Alkane?
A family of hydrocarbons whose molecules contain only carbon-carbon single bonds
What is an Alkene?
A family of hydrocarbons that contain one or more carbon-carbon double bonds
What is an Alkyne?
A family of hydrocarbons with one or more carbon-carbon triple bonds
What is the general formula for alkenes?
CnHn2
What is the name for Alkenes containing one double bond?
Same prefixes as Alkanes with the ending -ene
What are the 2 unsaturated hydrocarbons?
Alkenes and and Alkynes
How are Alkynes named?
They have the same prefixes as Alkenes but have -yne endings
What is the simplest Alkyne?
Ethyne
