10.4, 10.5 Flashcards
What do carboxylic acids contain?
The carboxyl group a carbon double bonded to oxygen and an -OH group. -COOH
Where is the carboxyl group always located?
At the end of a carbon chain
What do carboxylic acids taste like?
Sour
What is the polarity of carboxylic acids?
They are polar and form hydrogen bonds with eachother
What is the solubility of carboxylic acids?
Smaller ones are soluble in water. Larger ones are insoluble in water
How are carboxylic acids named?
By replacing the ending of the alkane with -oic
What is a condensation reaction?
When a carboxylic acid combines with another reactant, forming two products, an organic compound and water
What happens when carboxylic acid reacts with alcohol?
It forms an ester. This is called esterification
What reacts in an esterification reaction?
The -OH in the carboxylic acid and the -H in the alcohol
What forms in an esterification reaction?
The ester and water
What is the functional group in an ester?
A carbon double bonded to an oxygen and another oxygen
What are esters responsible for?
Odours
How are esters named?
The first part is the name of the alkyl group from the alcohol and the second part is the name of the acid with the ending ate
