10.5 Flashcards
What are polymers?
Large molecules made by linking together smaller molecules such as monomers
What is polymerization?
The formation of polymers from the reaction of monomer sub-units
Describe the polymerization of ethene?
Double bonded ethene loses its double bonds and bonds with other carbons. This is called polyethene
Describe the polymerization of polypropene?
Double bonded carbons with a propene group lose their double bonds and bond with propene
What is polyvinyl chloride?
Polyethene except with chloride groups substituted
What is polystyrene or polybenzene?
Like polyethene except with a benzene molecule attached
What is Teflon?
Like polyethene, it is a polymer that istede is made with double bonds of carbon attached to fluorine
What are condensation polymers?
Polymers that are created through the reaction of the functional group of 2 different monomers
What is a structural analog?
A synthetic compound that has a similar structure to a naturally occurring compound
How are lipids formed?
By esterification reactions between glycerol and fatty acids
What is a polyester?
Many estered joined in a long chain
What is special about carbohydrates and cellulose polymers?
They are cyclical
What are biopolymers?
Natural polymers that have modifications
