9.2.2 - Neuron structure Flashcards
What does the corpus callosum in the brain do?
Connects left and right hemispheres.
What do ventricles in the brain do?
They are fluid-filled cavities inside the brain that keep the brain cushioned.
What does the cerebrum in the brain do?
Controls voluntary behaviour including movement.
What does the cerebellum do?
Controls balance and coordination of movement.
Do dendrites receive or pass on impulses?
Receive impulses
In the 3 main types of neuron, what structure passes on impulses?
Synaptic bulbs
How does the structure of a relay neuron differ from sensory and motor neurons?
It’s smaller
Has no myelin sheath.
In a sensory and relay neuron, how do you differentiate the axon from the dendron.
They are either side of the cell body.
Dendron closer to the dendrites which receive the impulse.
Axon on the other side of the cell body.
What does a sensory neuron receive impulses from?
Receptors.
What is the name of cells that myelinate neurons?
Schwann cells
What are functions of myelin sheath?
Protects the nerve from damage.
Speeds up the transmission of the impulse by insulating it.
What are gaps between schwann cells called?
Nodes of ranvier.
Do schwann cells contain nuclei?
YES
What is the dorsal route in the reflex arc?
Carries sensory nerve fibres to the spinal cord.
What is the ventral route in the reflex arc?
Carries motor nerve fibres away from the spinal cord.
