9.2.1 - The nervous system Flashcards
What makes up the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord.
What is the peripheral nervous system/
Made up of pairs of nerves which originate from either the brain or the spinal cord.
What is an example of a function in the body that is controlled by the autonomic nervous system?
pancreas secereting insulin
Is the somatic nervous system voluntary or involuntary?
Voluntary
What do sensory neurones do?
Carry impulses from receptors towards the CNS
What do motoe neurones do?
Carry impulses away from the CNS to effectors.
What does the voluntary nervous system do?
Carries nerve impulses to the muscles and is under voluntary or conscious control.
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Carries impulses to glands, smooth muscle or cardiac muscle.
Involuntary
What is the autonomic nervous system divided into?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Discuss the similarities and differences in the structures of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system?
Similarities - In both, fibres leave the CNS in a ganglion.
Differences - Sympathetic, ganglia are close to the CNS.
Parasympathetic, ganglia are close to the effector organ.
