5.2.2 - Absorption and Action spectra Flashcards
Why is so little of the sun’s radiation landing on a leaf converted into sugar?
Some light misses chloroplasts
Some of the light is reflected from the surface of the leaves.
Some light passes through the leaf.
Some light it the wrong wavelength.
What is the absorption spectrum?
The wavelengths of light that pigments absorb.
What is the action spectrum?
The wavelengths of light that affect the rate of photosynthesis.
What happens to electrons when chlorophyll and other pigments absorb light?
Energy level of electrons is raised.
The excited electrons are passed along electron transport chains.
At the end of the chain NADP is reduced to NADPH.
Describe the membrane of a chloroplast.
Has a double membrane.
What are grana made from?
Stacks of thylakoid.
What happens at thylakoid membranes?
Site of light dependent reactions.
What do lipid droplets act as in a chloroplast?
An energy store.
What type of ribosomes to chloroplasts have?
70S
Where do light independent reactions occur in chloroplasts?
Stroma
What is the function of starch grains in chloroplasts?
Storage product of photosynthesis.
What type of DNA do chloroplasts contain?
Circular DNA.
Do chloroplasts have nuclei?
NO
