6.2.3 - Fungi as pathogens Flashcards
Examples of Fungi
Mushrooms
Yeasts
Moulds
Are fungi usually single-celled?
YES
What are the cell walls of fungal cells made from?
Chitin and Glycan
What do parasites and saprophytes do?
Organisms that obtain food by absorbing dissolved organic matter
What are the 4 main structures in a fungi?
Fruiting body
Spores
Hyphae
Mycelium
What are hyphae?
Long thread-like filaments which emerge from the spore and penetrate the stomata or stem for example in plants.
What are spores used for in fungi?
Reproduction
What do cellulases do?
Digest plant cells
What happens after hyphae enter a surface?
They grow to form mycelium
What do mycelium do to plants?
Absorbs nutrients from plants
What do pustules do in fungi?
Break the plants epidermis, making it more difficult to do transpiration
What are 3 things that fungi can do?
Be poisonous
Cause allergies
Cause parasitic diseases
What does stem rust fungi do to a plant?
Take up nutrients
So less glucose to form starch
Stem rust interferes with vascular tissue
So less sucrose to transport to roots
