10.1.3 - Abiotic factors Flashcards
What are abiotic factors?
These are non-living factors that control different ecological niches.
What two ways of sampling can be used to get an estimate for the population in a larger area?
Random sampling
Systemic sampling
When is random sampling used?
Used when the area under study is very large and uniform.
A number of samples are taken from different positions within the habitat
How do you know where to sample when using random sampling?
Place a numbered grid over area and use a random number generator.
Random walk - compass bearing and number of steps are both randomised.
When is systemic sampling used?
and what does it involve?
Used when there is a change in species from one area of a habitat to another.
Lay a line (a transect) across an area and record species at regular intervals.
How long should the transect be when using systemic sampling?
When there is no further change, stop
What adaptation may plants living in low light intensity areas have?
More chlorophyll to absorb more light.
