8.1 Structure of the Immune System Flashcards
What does the spleen house?
- Blood storage
- Activates B- cells which turn into plasma cells to produce antibodies.
What is humoral immunity?
What is cell-mediated immunity?
Humoral- This includes antibodies that are secreted by WBCs and target specific antigens. B-cells
Cell-Mediated- T-Cells- coordinate immune system and directly kill virally infected cells.
What do lymph nodes do?
It’s a component of the lymphatic system.
It’s a place for immune cells to communicate and mount an attack. B-cells can be activated here.
Other examples of lymph tissue include: GALT (gut-associated lymphoid tissue) & tonsils & Peyer’s patches in the small intestine and the appendix.
In what two types of cells are leukocytes classified as?
Granulocytes: Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils
Agranulocytes: monocytes, lymphocytes
What do lymphocytes do?
They produce antibodies
What do monocytes do?
They become macrophages.
They can be called microglia (CNS), Langerhans cells (skin), and osteoclasts (bone)
What is the innate immunity?
Refers to the responses cells can carry out without learning
This is called the nonspecific immune response.
In what two broad categories can you devide the specific immune system into?
- Humoral immunity (B-cells & antibodies)
- Cell mediated Immunity (T-cells)
