8 - Viruses Flashcards
Virus
small intracellular parasite, require living host cell to replicate
Latent stage
some viruses enter host cells, but do not replicate until later
Mutate
viruses tend to change slightly during replication
(makes it difficult for antibodies or vaccines to work on
viruses) i.e. incorrect “recipe” to destroy the virus
Chlamydiae, Rickettsiae & Mycoplasms
divide by binary fission like bacteria, require living host cell like viruses
Chlamydiae
STD, host cell to replicate, PID and sterility in females
Mycoplasmas
Lack cell wall, not affected by antimicrobial drugs, common cause of pneumonia
Fungi
Eukaryotic, yeast/molds, reproduce via spore, cell wall
Protozoa
Eukaryotic, unicellular, live on dead organic material or parasitic
Pathogenic Protozoa
Trichomonas vaginalis
Entamoeba histolytica
Toxoplasma Gondii
Plasmodium
Worms
Eukaryotic, multicellular
