17 - Complications of Pregnancy Flashcards
Ectopic Pregnancy
Fertilized ovum implanted outside the uterus
Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH)
✴ Elevated BP (over 140/90)
✴ After 20 weeks gestation
✴ Normal after delivery
Preeclampsia
- Higher BP than PIH
- Proteinuria (kidneys involved)
- Weight gain
- Generalized edema
Eclampsia
- Higher BP than PIH
- Proteinuria (kidneys involved)
- Weight gain
- Generalized edema
- Seizures
Placenta Previa
Placenta implanted very low in the uterus or covering internal os.
Placenta previa causes
Painless bleeding later in preg. when os begins to open up
Abruptio Placenta
(Placental abruption)
Premature separation of the placenta from uterine wall causing painful bleeding
Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation
Serious complication of: Placental abruption and Preeclampsia. Excessive activation of clotting mechanism leading to “running out” of
clotting factors leading to excessive bleeding (hemorrhaging)
Thrombophlebitis AND Phlebothrombosis
Form in the legs after childbirth due to:
- stasis of blood
- increased coagulability
- phleblitis
Thromboembolism
- Thrombus (clot) that moves
- Will follow circulatory path until it gets caught in a smaller vessel
Rh Incompatibility
- Rh factor antigens on
red blood cells - Blood either rh + or -
