14 - Genetic Eng, Therapy, Down Syndrome Flashcards
Gene manipulation
removing defective gene, replace with a normal one to reduce risk of genetic defect in newborns
Genetic therapy
the introduction of genes into multicellular plants and animals sometimes by means of a harmless vurus
Two main approaches of gene therapy
- transferred genes replace defective
- selectively inhibit harmful genes
Issues with gene therapy
- genetically modified plants and animals for human consumption
- access of genetic information > insurance companies
Genetic engineering
manipulating nucleic acids + recombining genes into hybrid molecules that can be inserted into unicellular organisms and reproduces several times over
Each hybrid molecule produces
clones, genetically identical
Human genome project has determined
millions of base pairs in human DNA strand
Trisomy (Down Syndrome/Trisomy 21)
presence of an additional third chromosome
Down Syndrome Effects
- slanting eyes
- flat facial profile
- bridge palmar crease
- widened space between toes
- shortened 5th digit
Cause of Down Syndrome
error in cell division during meiosis
DS prenatal testing
- triple screen (AFP, hGC, unconjugated estriol)
- maternal blood test at 15-20wks
- fetal nuchal translucency
- amniocentesis
- chorionic villus sampling
- PUBS
