Jacksonian democracy
Jackson became the symbol of American democracy in the mud 1820s and he represented a down to earth/humble man
Martin van Buren
Man from NY who worked behind the scenes to build support for Andrew Jackson
Spoils system
Critics denounced the use of political jobs as a reward for party loyalty, a practice they called the spoils system
Indian removal act
Peacefully negotiate the exchange of American Indian lands in the south for new lands in the Indian territory (now OK)
Caucus
A closed meeting of party members for the purpose of choosing a candidate
Corrupt bargain
Jackson accused the outcome of Henry clay choosing Adams for the presidency as a corrupt bargain because Adams then appointed Clay as the Secretary of State
Worcester vs. Georgia
Indians appealed case to federal courts in 1832. The court ruled that Georgia’s land seizure was unconstitutional. Jackson did not accept this and told Marshall to try and enforce it.
Trail of tears
1838- soldiers forced 16000 Cherokees to leave their land and walk to Oklahoma on this trail. Many died..
Other rebellions
- second Seminole war (1835-1842), eventually left Florida
- 1836 after multiple conflicts w/whites, creeks left
- black hawk’s war (1832) fought federal troops, from Illinois. Black Hawk led resistance by Sauk and Fox nations.
Andrew Jackson
War hero of Tennessee who provided a competition for John Quincy Adams and lost the presidency in 1824
Election of 1824
The selection has no clear outcome Jackson wins the popular vote however neither candidate wins new majority of electoral votes the House of Representatives chooses John Quincy Adams to be president with the support from Clay this angers Jackson who criticizes Adams throughout his presidency

States rewrote their constitutions and remove property requirements
Election of 1828
Jackson wins! With Martin Van Buren as Secretary of State
Jackson promises to return to Jeffersonian principles with strong states in a week federal government and no interference with slavery
