7.4 - Observational Learning: Look at Me Flashcards
What did Albert Bandura study?
Aggressive observational learning using the Bobo doll experiment
- Children imitated adult behaviours and were sensitive to the consequences of their aggressive behaviour
Diffusion Chain
A process in which individuals initially learn a behaviour by observing another individual perform that behaviour, and then become models from which other individuals learn the behaviour
Observational Learning
Condition in which learning takes place by watching the actions of others
How are Pigeons used for observational learning?
They learn how to get reinforced for pecking behaviour
How do Rhesus monkeys use observational learning?
They develop a fear of snakes from the fear reactions of other monkeys. Lab-monkeys were able to learn the fear through observation.
Mirror Neurons
Fire to produce observational learning in humans as well as other animal species
Where are Mirror Neurons located?
Frontal (Area 40) and Parietal Lobes (Area 44)
What do Mirror Neurons indicate?
That when another organism is seen performing an action, it could indicate an awareness of intentionality or that the animal is anticipating a likely course of future actions
Implicit Learning
Learning that takes place largely without the awareness of the process or the products of acquisition
Implicit Learning studies
Participants had to memorize artificial grammar letter strings, which revealed participants learned grouping rules but were unaware of it.
Amnesiacs relation to explicit/implicit learning
Show intact implicit learning, but impaired explicit learning (suggesting different pathways)
Damage to what regions of the brain impair explicit memory?
Hippocampus + Medial Temporal Lobe
