3.3 The Organization of the Nervous System Flashcards
What is the “Nervous System”?
An interacting network of neurons that conveys electrochemical information throughout the body.
What does the CNS include?
The brain, and the spinal cord
What is the PNS?
The peripheral nervous system connects the CNS to the body’s organs and muscles.
What are the major subdivisions of the Peripheral Subdivision?
Somatic Nervous System
Autonomic Nervous System
A set of nerves that conveys information between voluntary muscles and the central nervous system.
Somatic Nervous System
A set of nerves that carries involuntary and automatic commands that control blood vessels, body organs, and glands
Autonomic Nervous System
What are the two major subdivisions of the Autonomic Nervous System?
Sympathetic
Parasympathetic
A set of nerves that prepares the body for action in challenging or threatening situations.
Sympathetic Nervous System
A set of nerves that helps the body return to a normal resting state
Parasympathetic Nervous System
What’s the PAIN WITHDRAWAL REFLEX?
Withdrawing from pain is a reflexive activity controlled by the spinal cord. Painful sensations (such as the heat of fire) travel directly to the spinal cord via sensory neurons, which then issue an immediate command to motor neurons to retract the hand.
What are the 4 main sections of the Spinal Cord?
Cervical Nerves
Thoracic Nerves
Lumbar Nerves
Sacral Nerves
What do Cervical Nerves connect to?
Head
Neck
Biceps/Deltoid
Wrist extenders
What do Thoracic Nerves connect to?
Chest
Abdomen
What do Lumbar Nerves connect to?
Legs
What do Sacral Nerves connect to?
Bowel/bladder
Sexual function
