7.2 SG Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
a catalyst that speeds up chemical reactions
What is a substrate?
a reactant that binds to an enzyme
What is an active site?
It’s where the reaction is occuring
What is activation energy?
How much energy is needed to start a reaction
What are enzymes properties?
They are reaction specific, not consumed in reaction, made of protein, and affected by cellular conditions.
Explain the reaction rate of enzyme concentrations
The more enzymes, means more collisions but the lack of substrates is a limiting factor
Explain the reaction rate of substrate concentrations
The more the substrates, the more collisions or reactions occur. However, the lack of enzymes becomes a limiting factor.
Explain the reaction rate of temperature.
The collision theory is used when temperature reaches 37 degrees, but denaturation happens and breaks the bonds.
Explain the reaction rate of pH.
This depends on the enzyme.
Compare and contrast inhibition and activation of enzymes
Inhibition of enzymes changes the enzyme away from the active site, while activation of enzymes interferes at the active site. They both affect/change the enzyme
