3.2 S.G. Flashcards
What is ecological succession?
a transition in species composition over time
What is secondary succession?
when a climax community or intermediate community is impacted by a disturbance.
What is primary succession?
happens when a new patch of land is created or exposed for the first timer
What is Climax community?
the “endpoint” of succession
What are Pioneer species?
species that are the first to colonize newly created environments
What is the seral stage?
an intermediate stage found in ecological succession in an ecosystem advancing towards its climax community.
What is Species Richness?
the number of species within a defined region
What is Species evenness?
the measure of the relative abundance of different species
How do you calculate H value?
Divide n by N. Then, find ln of that number. Then, Multiply that number by P. Then, add up all the species number.
Is this primary or secondary? Volcanic eruption with lava flow.
Primary Succession
Is this primary or secondary? Major flooding of a creek bed.
Secondary Succession
