5.2 SG Flashcards
Definition of covalent bonds
Bonding in which two molecules share or fight over electrons.
Definition of polar covalent bonds
Covalent bonds between two molecules that have different electronegativities.
Definition of non-polar covalent bonds
Covalent bonds between two molecules that have the same electronegativities.
Definition of ionic bonds
Bonds in which one molecule takes an electron from another.
What types of metals do covalent bonding?
nonmetals
What types of molecules do ionic bonding?
A nonmetal and a metal
How does electronegativity determine what type of bonds form?
The large differences in electronegativity result in ionic bonds, while smaller differences result in covalent bonds
How does covalent bonding work?
The molecules are pulled together, then pushed apart, and they form bonds by sharing electrons.
How does ionic bonding work?
Two opposite molecules are pulled together, and one molecule takes an electron from another, so they are both ions.
How does polar covalent bonding work?
It has one molecule with a higher electronegativity, so it pulls harder.
