7 EXCHANGE - Gas Exchange in insects Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Insect Tracheal system made up of?

A

Spiracles - allow air to flow in and out
Trachea - made of polymer chitin in a spiral shape, strong and flexible, prevents trachea from collapsing
Tracheoles - smaller tubes penetrating muscle tissue, contains tracheal fluid

Q

What are the main differences between the Human gas exchange vs Insect gas exchange?

A
  • Humans have much larger trachea (both length and diameter
  • Insects trachea = much smaller
  • Humans only have one trachea
  • Insects have many trachea
  • Human trachea branches into bronchi
  • Insect trachea branch into tracheoles
  • Human trachea is supported by cartilage
  • Insect trachea supported by spirals of chitin
