7 EXCHANGE - Gas Exchange in insects Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Insect Tracheal system made up of?
A
Spiracles - allow air to flow in and out
Trachea - made of polymer chitin in a spiral shape, strong and flexible, prevents trachea from collapsing
Tracheoles - smaller tubes penetrating muscle tissue, contains tracheal fluid
2
Q
What are the main differences between the Human gas exchange vs Insect gas exchange?
A
- Humans have much larger trachea (both length and diameter
- Insects trachea = much smaller
- Humans only have one trachea
- Insects have many trachea
- Human trachea branches into bronchi
- Insect trachea branch into tracheoles
- Human trachea is supported by cartilage
- Insect trachea supported by spirals of chitin
3
Q
What is the pathway of gas exhange into an insect?
A
Air flows in to the spiracles and down the trachea, then into the tracheoles where
