2 BM - Lipids Flashcards
1
Q
What are the roles of lipids ((WIPE))
A
Waterproof
Insulation
Protection
Energy Source
2
Q
What are the 3 main types of lipids?
A
- Triglycerides
- Phospholipids
- Steroids
3
Q
What is the structure of a steroid?
A
4 fused rings
4
Q
What is the structure of a triglyceride?
A
3 fatty acids with a glycerol backbone
5
Q
What is the structure of phospholipids
A
2 fatty acids, glycerol and a phosphate group.
6
Q
What are the bonds between lipids called?
A
Ester bonds.
7
Q
What is a saturated fatty acid?
A
A fatty acid with no double carbon bonds.
8
Q
What is a unsaturated fatty acid?
A
A fatty acid with double carbon bonds (there can be multiple.)
9
Q
Triglyceride properties and structure.
A
- High ratio of energy storing Carbon - Hydrogen bonds, meaning its hydrolysed during respiration.
- Low mass to energy ratio, meaning that they are a good storage molecule for storage in low volumes as there is less mass to move around.
- Large and non-polar molecules meaning that they are insoluble in water and will not affect the water potential in cells.
- Have a high ratio of hydrogen - oxygen atoms, meaning water is released when they’re hydrolysed.
