1 Cells - Cell Membranes Flashcards
1
Q
What is the main component of a plasma membrane?
A
The phospholipid bilayer.
2
Q
What are the different types of proteins in a plasma membrane?
A
- Peripheral proteins
- Intrinsic Proteins
3
Q
What are the different types of carbohydrates in a plasma membrane?
A
- Glycolipids
- Glycoproteins
4
Q
What are all the components of a plasma membrane?
A
- Phospholipid bilayer
- Intrinsic proteins
- Peripheral proteins
- Glycolipids
- Glycoproteins
- Cholesterol
5
Q
function of the phospholipid bilayer
A
- Form a barrier to dissolved substances.
- Center is fatty acids which are hydrophobic, water soluble
substances can’t pass through (ions + polar molecules)
-Allows lipid soluble molecules to pass through (non-polar and small) e.g- CO₂ is able to diffuse across the membrane.
6
Q
function of a intrinsic protein
A
- Channel proteins and carrier proteins allow
= large molecules
= polar molecules
= ions
to pass through the membrane
7
Q
function of a peripheral protein
A
- act as receptors, allowing cell to detect chemicals released from other cells so they are able to respond
8
Q
function of a glycoprotein
A
- proteins with a carbohydrate attached
- recognise other cells as familiar or foreign
- cell adhesion to form tissue
9
Q
function of a glycolipid
A
- proteins with a lipid attached
- cell recognition
- cell adhesion to form tissue
10
Q
What can glycolipids and glycoproteins be classed as?
A
- Antigens, this is due to their contribution in immune response as they facilitate cellular recognition.
11
Q
function of cholesterol
A
