Q

function of the phospholipid bilayer

A
  • Form a barrier to dissolved substances.
  • Center is fatty acids which are hydrophobic, water soluble
substances can’t pass through (ions + polar molecules)
-Allows lipid soluble molecules to pass through (non-polar and small) e.g- CO₂ is able to diffuse across the membrane.

6
Q

function of a intrinsic protein

A
  • Channel proteins and carrier proteins allow
    = large molecules
    = polar molecules
    = ions
    to pass through the membrane

Q

function of a peripheral protein

A
  • act as receptors, allowing cell to detect chemicals released from other cells so they are able to respond

Q

What can glycolipids and glycoproteins be classed as?

A
  • Antigens, this is due to their contribution in immune response as they facilitate cellular recognition.
