7. Endocrine System Flashcards
Do not have a duct system and release their secretions or hormones directly into the bloodstream
Endocrine Glands
Have ducts that allow the cells to secrete their products.
Exocrine glands
- The glands which function as both exocrine
gland and endocrine gland. - Thus, these glands have dual role.
* Pancreas
* Gonads
* Stomach
* Intestines
Heterocrine (Composite or mixed glands)
- A small, pea‐sized gland.
- Found at the base of the brain (sella turcica),
in line with the top of the nose. - Acts as the body’s ‘master gland’.
- It tells other glands in your body what to do.
Pituitary gland (hypophysis)
What does the Thyroid gland do?
- Development
- Growth
- Metabolism
What is the location of the thyroid gland?
- Front of the neck
- Posterior to the sternothyroid
and sternohyoid muscles
Which gland is this:
Primarily regulators of blood calcium and phosphorus levels in adults
Parathyroid glands
Where are the parathyroid glands located?
- Posterior to the thyroid gland.
- Most people have four glands
What glands lay a vital role in the body’s fight or
flight response?
Suprarenal (adrenal) glands
What is the location of the Suprarenal (adrenal) glands?
- Immediately superior and anterior of the upper end of each kidney.
- Left is more semi‐lunar, usually larger, and at a higher level than the right
What’s the importance of the gonad glands?
- Primary reproductive organs.
- Testes in male
- Ovaries in female.
What is the location of the gonad glands?
- Male – behind the penis in the scrotum.
- Female – in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus.
Abdominal gland with a digestive (exocrine) and
hormonal (endocrine) function.
Pancreas
What is this:
- Group of cell in the pancreas.
- Make hormone insulin
Pancreatic islets (Islets of Langerhans)
What is this:
- An endocrine gland.
- Regulates the body’s circadian cycle of sleep and wakefulness
Pineal Gland (Epiphysis cerebri)
