6.plant nutrition Flashcards
photosynthesis
the process by which plants synthesise carbs from raw materials using energy from light
photosynthesis word equation
carbon dioxide + water —-> glucose + oxygen (sunlight and chlorophyll abv arrow)
photosynthesis balanced chemical equation
6CO2 + 6H20 —> C6H12O6 + 602
vascular bundles
collections of xylem tubes and phloem vessels running side by side which form the veins in a leaf
epidermis
the outer layer of tissue on a plant
cuticle
a thin layer of wax that covers the upper epidermis where more photosynthesis happens
spongy mesophyll
the layer of cells immediately beneath the palisade mesophyll, where some photosynthesis happens
stomata
openings in the surface of a leaf that allow diffusion of carbon dioxide and oxygen in and out of a leaf
guard cells
a pair of cells that surrounds a stoma and controls its openings
destarching
leaving a plant in the dark for a long enough for it to use up its starch stores
limiting factor
a factor that is in short supply which stops an activity happening at a faster rate
limiting factor
a factor that is in short supply which stops an activity from happening at a faster rate
Limiting factors of photosynthesis
light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, temperature
