6.4 vocab quiz Flashcards
Description of the flow of information in cells from DNA to RNA to proteins.
Central Dogma
The process in which a particular segment of DNA is converted into mRNA.
Transcription
The process of using the information in mRNA to synthesize proteins.
Translation
Information carrier from DNA to the site of proteins synthesis.
mRNA
Enzyme that synthesizes strands of RNA.
RNA Polymerase
A protein found in bacteria that binds to RNA polymerase and recognizes and binds to the base sequence of a promoter.
Sigma Factor
Part of a protein-coding gene that identifies the site in DNA where transcription will begin
Promotor Sequence
DNA strand that is used as a template for transcription
Template Strand
Regions of eukaryotic genes that are part of the final RNA. They are expressed.
Exon
Regions of primary transcripts in eukaryotes that are not in the final transcript. They are removed due to splicing.
Intron
DNA strand that has the same sequence of bases as the resulting mRNA, except that it contains thymine, whereas the mRNA contains uracil.
Coding Strand
A step in RNA modification in eukaryotes where a 5’ cap is added to the pre-mRNA.
Capping
Complex of RNA and proteins that removes introns from the eukaryotic pre-mRNA.
Spliceosome
A string of adenine nucleotides attached to the 3’ end of the pre-mRNA during RNA modification.
