3.4 vocab quiz Flashcards
Basic structure of biological membranes
phospholipid bilayer
Depiction of the plasma membrane as a semifluid phospholipid bilayer with proteins and carbohydrates attached to lipids and/or proteins
Fluid mosaic model
A type of membrane protein that is integrated into the hydrophobic region of the membrane.
Intergral membrane protein
Protein noncovalently attached to protein or a lipid in the lipid bilayer
peripheral membrane protein
Spontaneous movement of molecules and ions from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Diffusion
Movement of water down its concentration gradient.
Osmosis
Solution that has a higher solute concentration on one side of a membrane than the other side.
Hypertonic
Solution that has a lower solute concentration on one side of a membrane than the other side.
hypotonic
Transmembrane proteins assist passive transport of substances that cannot cross the lipid bilayer on their own down their concentration gradient.
Facilitated diffusion
Transmembrane proteins move ions or molecules across a membrane against their concentration gradient.
active transport
Transporter molecule that move two or more molecules in the same direction across the membrane
symporter
A type of transport protein that is an open passageway for the facilitated diffusion of ions or molecules across a membrane.
channel
A type of transport protein that binds to their solute and undergoes conformational changes.
transporters
Transporter that moves one ion or molecule across the membrane
uniporter
