Task orientated
Process
Performance
Outcome
Describe the characteristics of a task orientated goal and give an example to support your answer
Task orientated goals aim is to improve on your own performance. Does not measure ones ability against others. The process is more important than the outcome e.g. a person gets a personal best for a 10km race, regardless of where they placed.
Describe the characteristics of a process goal and give an example to support your answer
Process goals are short term goals aimed to improve technique for example improving a line out throw
Describe the characteristics of a performance goal and give an example to support your answer
Performance goals are set against yourself to improve performance e.g. getting a faster time than last competition
Describe the characteristics of an outcome goal and give an example to support your answer
Outcome goals are long term goals set against others and are based on the outcome e.g. win the junior championships
Identify the principles of effective goal setting
SMARTER goals
S - specific
M - measurable
A - achievable
R - realistic
T - time bound
E - evaluate
R - re do
What does the ‘E’ and ‘R’ stand for in terms of setting a SMARTER goal
Evaluate (evaluate if the coach should change the goal/if it was achieved) and Re do (repeat efforts if goal is not reached)
Explain the difference between a realistic and achievable goal
Realistic: the goal must be within the performers reach
Achievable: the performer must be able to achieve their goal within the time frame
