2.5 Information processing Flashcards
What does the ‘display’ mean and give an example
Everything in the sporting environment that provides the performer with information.
What is meant by the receptor system?
The senses that pick up information from the display
- sight
- auditory
- touch
- kinaesthesis
- balance
What is meant by proprioceptors in terms of information processing
The senses that provide INTERNAL information from within the body e.g. balance
What is meant by Kinesthesis in terms of information processing?
The inner sense that gives info about your body position and muscular tension
Define the input stage
Info picked up by senses
Name all 5 senses and state wether they’re external or proprioceptors?
Sight - External Auditory - External Touch Balance Kinaesthesis
Define information processing
The methods by which information from the display is collected and utilised
What is meant by kineasthesis?
Information about the position/orientation of the body
What are the stages of information processing?
Input
Decision making
Output
Feedback
Which model presents information processing?
Whiting’s information processing model
What does Whiting’s model present?
Information processing
Describe Whitings model
Circle shaped
Input data from display - Receptor system - Perceptual mech - Translatory mech - Effector mech, Muscular system, Output data, Feedback
What occurs at the perceptual mechanism in Whiting’s model?
What is meant by selective attention?
Filter out irrelevant from relevant information
What could be done to develop selective attention?
- More intense stimulus
- Train with distractions
- Train in realistic environment
- Improve motivation
- Mental practise
Memory tool:
A performer can develop selective attention through making the stimulus more intense, loud and bright while training as this will develop concentration. For example training with a bright coloured football / training with music.

What is meant by a stimuli?
Information from the display
Explain what occurs at the perceptual mechanism in Whiting’s model
- Process of interpreting sensory information
- The perceptual stage is is divided into three aspects - DCR
What are the benefits of effective selective attention
- Improved reaction time
- Improves chances of correct decision being made
- Makes decision process quicker
What processes takes place within the perceptual mechanism?
DCR & Selective attention
D-etection
C-omparison
R-ecogition
What is meant by the translatory mechanism?
Comparing coded information (picked up from perceptual mechanism) to previous experiences from memory so a decision can be made
What is meant by the effector mechanism?
Network of nerves that sends impulses to muscles.
