6. Angular Motion Flashcards
What is Angular Motion?
Angular motion occurs when a body moves along a circular path, revolving around a central line or point
● Angular motion is also referred to as rotation
What are the 3 Type of Angular Movements?
Yaw: rotating to the left or right
Pitch: rotating up or down
Roll: tilting to the left or right
What is an External Axis of Rotation?
- Imaginary line found outside of the body
- System moves in a circular path around the axis
What is an Internal Axis of Rotation?
- Imaginary line found inside of the body
- System moves in a circular path around the axis
What are Cardinal Planes?
A plane that passes through the midpoint or center of gravity of the body
What is the Saggital Plane?
A vertical plane that divides the body into left & right halfs.
Movements in this plane include flexion and extension
What is the Frontal/Coronal Plane?
A vertical plane that divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) sections.
Movements in this plane include abduction and adduction
What is the Transverse Plane?
A horizontal plane that divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) sections.
Movements in this plane include rotation
What is Yaw?
Yaw:
- To Rotate around a vertical axis
- Associated with the Transverse (Horizontal) Plane
- Turn left and right - shaking your head “no”
What is Pitch?
Pitch:
- rotate around a mediolateral axis
- Associated with the Sagittal Plane
- to look up or down - nodding your head “yes”
What is Roll?
Roll:
- Rotate around an anterioposterior axis
- Associated with the Frontal (Coronal) Plane
- Involving side-to-side tilting
What axis of movement is associated with the Saggital Plane and what movements are performed in this plane?
Pitch - The Mediolateral Axis
- Flexion / Extension
- Dorsiflexion / Plantarflexion
What axis of movement is associated with the Frontal Plane and what movements are performed in this plane?
Roll - The Anteriorposterior Axis
- Abduction / Adduction
- Lateral Flexion
- Elevation / Depression
What axis of movement is associated with the Transverse Plane and what movements are performed in this plane?
Yaw - The Longitudal Axis
- Medial / Lateral Rotation
- Pronation / Supination
