16. Muscle Flashcards
The Length-Tension Relationship:
What is The Sarcomere?
Interactions of the actin and myosin filaments with each other determine the active tension developed in the sarcomere
What are the 3 Types of Muscle Arrangements?
- Parallel
- Convergent
- Pennate
What is the Parallel Arrangement of Muscle?
- Long fibers acting over a great distance
- Aren’t that strong but high in endurance
What is the Convergent Arrangement of Muscle?
- The fibers converge at the insertion point to maximize the muscle action
- Provides increased strength
What is the Pennate Arrangement of Muscle?
- Fibers span short distances in feather- like arrangement
- Strongest fascicle arrangement
- Can be Unipennate, Bipennate or Multipennate
How does Body Temperature affect Muscle force and velocity for Concentric Actions?
Higher Maximum Isometric Tension and higher Maximum Velocity of shortening is possible at a given load at warmer temperatures
ON FINAL EXAM
What factors affect the force generating capabilities of a muscle?
- Muscle Fiber Type (fast vs slow)
- Cross-Sectional Area
- Muscle Length
- History of Activation
- Motor Units Recruited
- Temperature
- Contractile Velocity
