15. Equilibrium, Balance & Stability Flashcards
When are living humans motionless?
Never, we can’t be truly motionless as long as our hearts are pumping an we are breathing
What is Equilibrium?
Equilibrium is a physical state, in which opposing forces equal out
What is Balance?
- Balance is an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady
- Balance is a static concept
What is Static equilibrium?
Static equilibrium occurs when an object is at rest with no net force or torque acting on it, resulting in zero acceleration.
What is Stability?
- Stability is the capacity of an object to return to equilibrium or to its original position after it has been displaced
- Stability is a dynamic concept (ish)
- Reflexes
The center of gravity of an object is its balance point or the point about which the moments of force created by the weights of all the parts of the object sum to zero.
Knowing this, how does an object stay balanced?
For an object to be in balance (in a state of equilibrium), the external forces acting on it or the moments of those forces must sum to zero
How do we calculate Static Equilibrium?
Calculating Static Equilibrium
Two individuals apply force to opposite sides of a frictionless swinging door. If A applies a 30 N force at a 40° angle from 45 cm from the door’s hinge and B applies force at a 90° angle 38 cm from the door’s hinge, what amount of force is applied by B if the door remains in a static position?
The forearm is oriented at 90° relative to the humerus. The center of mass of the forearm and hand, 24 N, is located 16 cm from the elbow and the elbow flexor muscles attach 3.2 cm from the joint center. A 60 N weight is being held stationary in the hand 28 cm from the joint center.
Assuming the muscle attaches at an angle of 90° relative to the bone, how much force must be produced in the muscle to maintain this position in static equilibrium?
What is Dynamic Equilibrium?
How do we calculate it?
A 580 N skydiver in free fall is accelerating at -8.8 m/s2 rather than -9.81 m/s2 because of the force of a vertical air resistance. How much force is acting on the skydiver?
Slide 17
The center of gravity of an object is its balance point or the point about which the moments of force created by the weights of all the parts of the object sum to zero.
Does this effect Stability?
So, stability is affected by, among other things, the position of the center of gravity
The stability of an object is affected by the base of support, the area bound by the outermost regions of contact between a body and support surface.
How can we increase our stability while standing?
How is Stability affected as the center of gravity moves toward the anterior-posterior edge?
Stability decreases as the center of gravity moves towards
the anterior-posterior edge of the base of support
How is Stability affected as the center of gravity moves toward the lateral edge?
Stability decreases as the center of gravity moves towards the lateral edge of the base of support
