5. Torque: Terms & Definitions Flashcards
Center of Gravity / Mass
A point on an object where weight is equally distributed in all directions
Centric Force
Force that is applied to the center of gravity of an object resulting in translation only
Couple
two eccentric forces acting at different points on an object that rea opposite in direction but equal in magnitude, resulting in pure moment
Eccentric Force
A force that is applied away from the center of gravity resulting in translation and roatation
First Class Lever
A lever where the fulcrum is in the middle and effort and resistance are on either side
Example: scissors or neck joint
Force Arm
The force arm is the distance between the point where force is applied and the fulcrum in a lever system.
Fulcrum
The fulcrum is the fixed point around which a lever pivots or rotates.
Lever
a rigid object that rotates about a fulcrum that is used to enchance force, making ot easier to move a load
Mechanical Advantage
Ratio of output force to input force
Moment Arm
the distance between the resistance (object being moved) and the fulcrum
Pure Moment
pure rotation
Resistance Arm
the distance between the resistance (object being moved) and the fulcrum
Second Class Lever
A lever where teh resistance is in the middle and the effort and fulcrum are on either side
Third Class Lever
A lever where the effort is in the middle and the fulcrum and resistance are on either side
Torque
a force that has a tendecy to create rotation
