5.10 Biologic Behaviour of tumors Flashcards
neoplasms affect on patients
different types of neoplasms affect the patient in a variety of ways
signs and symptoms
pain, mass, hemorrhage, lumen obstruction, loss of function, hormone secretion, infection, cachexia
Pain (unfortunately not common)
pain not being there is more diagnostic like an LN that is hard and immobile with no pain points to cancer
see pain in
pancreatic carcinoma, bone cancer
Mass
breast cancer, brain tumors
Hemorrhage
renal cell adenocarcinoma, colon adenocarcinoma, leukemia
in a male over 55 with iron deficiency anemia you need to rule out
carcinoma
in leuekmia you see
wide spread bleeding bc platelet numbers go down
lumen obstruction
colon cancers (especially distal), Pancreatic carcinoma
Loss of function
brain tumors
hormone secretion
parathyroid adenoma, pituitary adenoma, adrenal cortical adenoma and carcinoma
in pituitary adenoma homones may
decrease because over growth of pituitary in sellatursica can obsturct the pituitary gland, but you can also see increased hormone levels too
infection
lung cancer, colon cancer with perforation
cachexia
sever wasting weight loss in many malignancies - cytokines (mostly TNF) account for this
