5.1 The Heart Flashcards
What is the heart surrounded by?
Lung tissue
Where is the heart found?
The thorax
What protects it?
Sternum and ribs
How many chambers are in the heart?
Four
The right side of the heart
Receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs
Blood leaving the right side of the heart is
Deoxygenated
The left side of the heart
Receives blood from the lungs and pumps it round body
Blood leaving leaving the left side of the heart is
Oxygenated
The heart is made up of what muscle?
Cardiac muscle
Is the oxygen demand high or low?
High!
There is a very good blood supply via the
Coronary arteries
Each side has how many chambers?
Two
The atrium is
Thin-walled and elastic. It stretches as it collects blood.
The ventricle is
Much thicker muscular wall as it has to pump blood much further
Which side has a thicker ventricular wall?
Left
What do valves do?
Maintain the one-way flow of blood through the circulatory system.
What is the name of the two atrioventricular valves?
Bicuspid and tricuspid
What do the atrioventricular valves do?
Prevent blood being forced back into the atria.
What helps the atrioventricular valves?
Tendons
Where are the semilunar valves located?
The beginning of the aorta and pulmonary artery
What do the semilunar valves do?
Stop blood being pulled back into the ventricles
