2.2 Carbohydrates - Monosaccharides Flashcards
What is the basic monomer unit of a carbohydrate?
A sugar (saccharide)
What is a single sugar called?
A monosaccharide
What is a pair of monosaccharides called?
A disaccharide
What do you call a group of monosaccharides
Polysaccharides
What is the best-known monosaccharide?
Glucose
What is the test for reducing sugars?
Benedict’s test
How do you carry out the Benedict’s test?
Add 2cm3 of the food sample to be tested to a test tube. If it is not in liquid form, grind it up in water. Add an equal volume of Benedict’s reagent. Heat the mixture in a gently boiling water bath for 5 minutes.
What colour would you expect after conducting the Benedict’s test with the concentration of sugar being zero?
Blue
What colour would you expect after conducting the Benedict’s test with the concentration of sugar being very low?
Green
What colour would you expect after conducting the Benedict’s test with the concentration of sugar being low?
Yellow
What colour would you expect after conducting the Benedict’s test with the concentration of sugar being medium?
Orange
What colour would you expect after conducting the Benedict’s test with the concentration of sugar being high?
Red
