5.1 DNA & Protein Synthesis Flashcards
What does a gene carry?
genetic information to make a protein
What is the structure of DNA?
a double stranded helix held together by complementary base pairs
What are the two sets of complementary base pairs?
A-T (adenine-thymine)
G-C (guanine-cytosine)
What does mRNA do?
carries a complementary copy of DNA from the nucleus out into the cytoplasm and attaches to the ribosomes
Which base does mRNA replace with a different base and what is the name of the replacement?
replaces thymine with urasil
Powhatan makes up proteins?
amino acids
What determines the sequence of amino acids in a protein?
the order of bases in DNA
Explain relationship between chromosomes, DNA and genes…
chromosomes are made up of long spirals of DNA and genes are parts of DNA within the chromosomes which code for specific things
