2.2 The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the peripheral nervous system made of?
Nerves connected to the CNS.
What makes up the central nervous system?
- Brain and spinal cord
- Connected to rest of body by nerves
What are nerves?
Specialised cells that carry messages in then form of electrical impulses to and from the CNS.
What does the nervous system allow the body to do?
Respond to external changes appropriately to maintain stable body conditions.
What is the junction between one neuron and the next called?
Synapse
What are the points on a neuron called which connect?
dendrites
How do the electrical impulses get across a synapse?
As a chemical signal
What does the CNS do?
Sorts info from sense organs and sends messages to muscles or glands to make an appropriate response.
Describe a reflex arc…
- message taken from sense organ by sensory nerve
- taken through the CNS by relay nerves
- message taken by motor nerve to muscle or gland
What is the cerebrum?
Controls learning, memory, personality, reasoning and control of conscious reactions/movements.
What is the cerebellum?
Controls balance and muscular co ordination.
What is the medulla?
Controls the rate of breathing and heart rate.
